“I don’t know how to act my age; I’ve never been this age before.” ~Anon. That’s a very true statement, the only way we know how to act older is to observe older people and mimic their behaviour. The question now is, do we act like the mad person down the road or the reserved person up on the hill? That’s a question everybody will have to answer for themselves. The most important word in that sentence is, “act” because that’s what everybody does, they act like they think they’re supposed to.
I believe age is a number by which we calculate how long we’ve been alive and that’s all it is, it has no bearing on how you act unless you want it to. I know as I’ve gotten a little bit older the only thing that’s changed is my editor. When it comes to partying it constantly informs me, “no, that’s not something we do at our age,” most of the time I do listen, however, there are moments especially after a few drinks when the editor is locked away for a couple of hours and the party begins in earnest, I dance like nobody’s watching. Nobody gets hurt and I have fun.
In my everyday life I never let age be used as an excuse to not do something. My goal is to be able to do the same things at 80 as I do today, maybe a little bit slower but that is all.
I’ll leave you with the very best advice,
“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.” ~Mark Twain.
