Something New Every Day

Stories and essays on identity, creative thought, and everyday common sense.

You have to save yourself from yourself

Your brain is hardwired to protect you from any potential threats to your existence, and that’s why your brain will focus on negativity before positivity. It’s trying to protect you.

In the days of the hunter gatherer this is a wonderful thing because no wild animals would be able to sneak up on you, however, in the modern world we live in this inbuilt defence mechanism is being exploited by everybody trying to get your money and attention.

I’m only going to use one example but that can be extrapolated onto every business.

Main stream media have been sharing negative stories for as long as they’ve been in existence, the stories are always the same, the only difference is the characters they’re telling the story about. I.E John died in a terrible accident, next week it will be Roderick, the week after that it will be Woderick. You get the idea.

The thing is, they’re not telling you something that’s newsworthy, if you knew those people personally you wouldn’t need to hear about it on the news. What main stream media is actually doing is; they’re selling your attention to their advertisers by sharing negative stories with you.

That negativity does not have any benefits for you.

However, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, you can choose to eliminate negativity from your life by refusing to listen to negativity.

  • Stop listening to main stream media.
  • Stop listening to advertisers who claim your life will be improved if you’re seen using their products.
  • Stop listening to people who share negative stories about your neighbours.
  • Stop accepting everyone else’s reality as your reality.
  • Stop sharing negative stories with other people.

Yes, there is a lot of negativity in the world, always has been, however, it’s up to you to decide how much of it you allow into your life.

I’ll leave you with one final thought.

You are the product of your environment and you are at the controls.
