Something New Every Day

Stories and essays on identity, creative thought, and everyday common sense.

I grew up in a time when circuses were popular. They visited the village where I lived once a year. There was great excitement when they arrived and began erecting the big top before the first performance. Of course, the excitement wasn’t shared by our parents who had to find the extra money to buy tickets for seven children. No mean feat at a time when money was as scarce as the cars on the roads, but without fail, we all got to go. I don’t know what they sacrificed for that to happen. However, I’m absolutely positive that sacrifices were made. After queuing up, handing over our tickets, and finding our seats, we waited patiently for the ring master to begin the proceedings with their customery greeting, “ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to our show.” The show would begin, and we would be highly entertained for the next ninty minutes by clowns, acrobats, strong men, and trained animals.

That was a simpler time before the world decided that there’s more than two genders. I’m not going into any more detail other than to say the ring master in today’s circus would spend a lot longer with their greeting. I personally think a lot of issues would be resolved if the right situations arose. For example, if a ship was sinking and the first people to be allowed into the lifeboats were women and children, you’ll find men who want to be identified as women, but you won’t find one woman claiming to be non-binary. You’ll also find that those women will be able to accurately identify the men who try to take a woman’s or child’s place in the lifeboats.

The world is not what it was, and it will probably not be like that again. I guess we will have to accept the changes time has brought or every real woman on the planet can stand up and defend what it means to be a real woman. I’ll leave you with one final thought.

Men and women can never be equal. In no mathematical equation, can you put a woman on one side and a man on the other side where they’re going to balance the equation.
