Something New Every Day

Stories and essays on identity, creative thought, and everyday common sense.

Do you know who you are? It’s a simple question that everyone should be able to answer quite easily because they’ve been living with themselves for their whole life.

So, who are you?

It’s an easy question to ask, but I don’t think it’s an easy question to answer. Let’s begin with the premise that everyone is unique. What is it about you that makes you unique? This is where the process of elimination comes into play. We can eliminate all the things that don’t make you unique.

Are you a man or a woman? The answer to that question won’t identify who you are, but it will help other people to identify your body if something happens to you.

Does your physical appearance make you unique? The answer to that question is yes, but if someone is asking the “Who are you?” Question. Telling them what you look like isn’t telling them anything they can’t see for themselves, so it doesn’t answer the question.

Does what you do for a living make you unique? If you happen to be God’s assistant, then that could make you unique. However, if God has thousands of assistants, then you’re only one of many, and that doesn’t tell people who you are.

Does owning things make you unique? So, you live in a house you call your own and you also have a car. You should have said that sooner, now I know who you are. No, my friend, I’m kidding. Nothing you have will tell me who you are because everyone has things.

Does what you know make you unique? Once upon a time before Google, the answer to that question could have been yes. However, these days, information is accessible to everyone.

Does having a sense of humour make you unique? No, my friend, but having a good sense of humour will mean that people will enjoy being in your company.

Does having the ability to think and learn make you unique? The simple answer is no.

Does being passionate about something make you unique? No, that doesn’t make you unique either. Everyone is passionate about something, even if they’re passionate about doing nothing.

I’m sorry for interrupting you. You were just about to tell me who you are.

So, who are you?

When you eliminate everything that doesn’t make you unique, what’s left is who you really are. I can’t wait to read your answer.
