Yearning for emotional experiences

In a quiet, unremarkable town named Dunbridge, there was a clockmaker named Edwin Dake. Edwin was known for his meticulous craftsmanship, creating clocks and watches that not only told time but seemed to hold time within them, capturing moments as if they were tangible. However, success in business didn’t cross over to his personal life, and for this reason, Edwin felt a peculiar emptiness, a yearning for an experience he never had the time to create.

One evening, as Edwin was closing his shop, an elderly woman entered. Her eyes sparkled with an ancient wisdom, and she carried an ornate, timeworn pocket watch. She introduced herself as Evelyn and explained that the watch had stopped ticking. She told Edwin that she had taken the watch to every watch maker she knew, and none of them could fix it. Intrigued, Edwin agreed to take a look.

As he worked on the intricate mechanisms, Edwin noticed something odd. Inside the watch, there was a tiny, delicate key unlike any he’d ever seen. When he turned it, a soft, melodic chime resonated through the shop, and everything around him seemed to blur and shift.

Suddenly, Edwin found himself standing in a vibrant, bustling marketplace. The air was filled with the scent of spices and flowers, and the sky was painted with the hues of a sunset. People moved around him, laughing and talking, yet they seemed unaware of his presence. In the midst of this scene, he spotted Evelyn not as the old woman in his store but as a young, radiant figure. She was dancing, and her movements were so fluid and graceful that she seemed to transcend human limitations.

Edwin realized he was witnessing a moment frozen in time, a memory encapsulated within the watch. As he watched, he felt a profound connection to the scene, a deep sense of longing and fulfilment all at once. It was the feeling he had yearned for his entire life: a timeless, all-encompassing emotional experience.

When the chime faded, Edwin was back in his shop, the watch ticking perfectly once more. Evelyn smiled knowingly and thanked him, but before she left, she handed him the tiny key. “This is for you,” she said. “To unlock moments of true wonder whenever you need it.”

From that day on, Edwin’s life changed. He used the key sparingly, each time experiencing a new, beautiful moment, not just of his own life but from the lives of countless others. These glimpses filled the void in his heart, giving him a sense of fulfilment and connection he had never known.

The townspeople noticed a new lightness in Edwin, a quiet joy that seemed to radiate from him. Though he never spoke of the key or the memories it unlocked, those who encountered him felt a touch of the wonder he carried within.

Edwin lived a long, contented life, his heart always brimming with the extraordinary moments he had glimpsed. And when he finally passed away, the key was found clutched in his hand. No one knew the importance of the key, but that was about to change when Edwin’s  apprentice found his diary in the workshop.
