Josh was always too quick to take offence

Finally, Sarah, who had been friends with Josh the longest, decided it was time to address the issue. She gently pulled him aside, away from the group.

“Josh,” she began softly, “I know you don’t mean to, but sometimes you take things the wrong way. We all care about you, and no one is trying to offend you.”

Josh’s face softened, but his eyes were wary. “I just feel like people are always criticizing me, even when they’re not.”

Sarah nodded. “I understand that, but you have to trust that we are your friends. We’re here because we enjoy your company, not to put you down.”

Josh sighed, a mixture of frustration and understanding. “I guess I never really thought of it that way. It’s just hard for me not to take things personally.”

Sarah smiled. “We all have our quirks. Just try to give us the benefit of the doubt, okay?”

Josh nodded slowly. “I’ll try.”

When they rejoined the group, the atmosphere was noticeably lighter. Josh made a conscious effort to relax and not overthink every word. His friends, in turn, were more mindful of their phrasing, hoping to avoid misunderstandings.

As the sun began to set and the picnic came to an end, Josh realized something important. Taking offence had become a habit, a defence mechanism that was pushing his friends away rather than bringing them closer. Determined to change, he decided to work on his reactions and learn to trust the intentions behind his friends’ words.

It wasn’t easy, and there were still moments of misunderstanding, but with time and effort, Josh’s relationships improved. He learned that not every comment was a hidden critique, and his friends appreciated his attempts to understand them better.

In the end, Josh discovered that letting go of unnecessary offence made room for genuine connection and a lot more laughter. And that it was definitely worth the effort.
