Don’t let the world’s problems become your problems

In a bustling city, there lived a man named David. Every morning, he would wake up to the blaring news on his television, which reported endless crises—wars, natural disasters, political strife, and economic downturns. David, a kind-hearted soul, felt the weight of the world’s problems on his shoulders. He often found himself consumed by worry and despair, unable to focus on his own life and happiness.

One day, David met an elderly man named Ben at a local park. Ben was sitting on a bench, calmly feeding the birds. Intrigued by his serene demeanour, David struck up a conversation. He shared his feelings of helplessness and anxiety about the state of the world.

Ben listened intently and then smiled gently. “David,” he said, “the world has always had its share of problems. While it’s important to be aware and compassionate, you mustn’t let the world’s problems become your problems.”

David frowned, confused. “But how can I ignore all the suffering and chaos around me?” he asked.

Ben shook his head. “It’s not about ignoring them. It’s about finding balance. You must care for the world, but also care for yourself. Focus on what you can change and let go of the things you can’t change.”

David pondered Ben’s words as he walked home. He decided to make a change. He still watched the news but limited his exposure. He started volunteering at a local shelter, channelling his concern into positive action. He practised mindfulness and spent time in nature, allowing himself to recharge and find peace.

As weeks turned into months, David noticed a significant change in his outlook. He felt lighter, more hopeful, and better equipped to face life’s challenges. He realised that while he couldn’t solve all the world’s problems, he could contribute in his own small way without losing himself in the process.

One evening, as he sat in the park, watching the sunset, he thought of Ben’s wisdom. He understood now that taking care of his own well-being allowed him to be a better friend, volunteer, and citizen. The world’s problems no longer felt like an insurmountable burden. Instead, they became opportunities for growth and compassion, approached with a balanced heart.

David learned to live a life of mindful engagement, embodying the lesson that to truly help the world, one must first ensure their own inner peace.
