The Human Golden Retriever We All Deserve

You know that person.

The one who walks into a room and somehow the Wi-Fi feels stronger, the coffee tastes better, and your ex’s name suddenly doesn’t sting quite as much.

That’s Alex.

Alex wakes up at 5 a.m.—not because they have to, but because they’re genuinely excited to see what ridiculousness the universe has prepared for them today.

They do yoga, but not in a smug way.

More in a “I fell over twice and laughed about it” way.

Talented? Please.

Alex can parallel park a stick shift, perfectly flip a pancake, and quote every line from The Princess Bride on command. They once fixed a broken dishwasher with a paperclip and sheer optimism.

They speak three languages—fluently.

Well, two.

Their Spanish is delivered with such enthusiasm that native speakers simply applaud and hand them tapas.

But the smile.

Oh, the smile.

It isn’t just warm. It’s radiant.

It’s the kind of smile that makes you immediately confess your deepest fears, your secret ambitions, and that thing you did with the office microwave.

Alex listens.

They nod.

Then they say:

“Honestly? Iconic.”

And somehow, you believe them.

Alex is clever without being sharp.

Witty without drawing blood.

When someone starts complaining about everything, Alex doesn’t argue. They simply tilt their head and say:

“That’s one way of looking at it. What if we tried enjoying it instead?”

And somehow, you do.

They give compliments like other people give out sweets.

Specific.

Genuine.

Impossible to forget.

“You have the laugh of someone who’s read good books.”

“Your hair is doing exactly what it should be doing today.”

And suddenly, you’re walking a little taller.

Are they perfect?

Absolutely not.

They once put a fork in the microwave.

They have cried during a commercial about a dog.

They occasionally wave back at someone who wasn’t waving at them.

But they own it.

Every awkward moment is simply another quirky footnote in their ongoing story of how to be delightfully human.

And perhaps that’s the real secret.

We don’t need more perfect people.

We need more people who make it easier for everyone else to be imperfect.

People who smile first.

People who laugh at themselves.

People who can be kind without needing an audience.

People who make you feel that you don’t have to perform, impress, compete, or pretend.

You don’t have to become Alex.

But you could steal the playbook.

Smile first.

Listen properly.

Give someone a compliment they’ll remember.

Laugh when you make a fool of yourself.

Be so unapologetically kind that people forget to be insecure around you.

And when life gets complicated, ask yourself:

What would Alex do?

They’d probably make you a cup of tea.

Then remind you that you’re already enough.

So go.

Be the warm smile someone else needs today.

And if you trip?

Make it a dance move.

Alex would.
