Everything Is Linked

Everything Is Linked — If You’re Interested in Finding the Connection.

I used to think learning was about collecting facts.

Now, I think it is about learning to recognise structure.

The same patterns appear in places that seem completely unrelated.

Incentives shape behaviour — in people, businesses, markets, and AI.

Selection pressure produces strategies — some admirable, some manipulative, some simply effective.

Feedback loops amplify whatever they touch — whether that is an idea, a habit, a belief, or a technology.

Once you understand a mechanism in one domain, you can sometimes recognise it operating somewhere else.

Not merely as a metaphor.

But having the same underlying logic wearing different clothes.

That is why deep understanding can be more powerful than memorisation.

A memorised fact can disappear.

A mental model can help you reconstruct the fact.

But there is an important warning.

Seeing patterns is not the same as finding patterns everywhere.

A good thinker doesn’t simply make connections.

They test them.

They ask:

Does the same mechanism really exist here?

What evidence would prove me wrong?

Where does the analogy break down?

That matters more than ever because we are now creating systems that learn from us.

AI absorbs our knowledge, our assumptions, our biases, our evasions, our brilliance, and our contradictions.

Then its outputs flow back into the world.

People read them.

People learn from them.

People use them to create more information.

And that information can eventually become part of what future systems learn from.

The loop continues.

We are training it.

It is influencing what we learn.

The quality of that feedback loop depends, at least partly, on the quality of what we put into it.

Perhaps this is one of the most important forms of education for the future:

Not simply knowing more.

But understanding how things work.

Learning to recognise patterns without becoming trapped by them.

Connecting ideas without assuming every connection is true.

Questioning our own models before asking others to adopt them.

Because the world is not a collection of completely separate subjects.

Biology influences technology.

Psychology influences economics.

Economics influences politics.

Technology influences psychology.

Human behaviour influences all of them.

The connections are already there.

The challenge is learning to see them clearly.

Perhaps that is what genuine learning really is.

Not filling your mind with more information.

But developing a mind capable of making sense of the information already there.

Because in a world where everything is connected, the quality of your understanding influences the quality of everything you create, believe, and pass on.
