Rumour and research only have R in common

rumour has it

Rumour and research only have r in common, however, if enough people spread the same rumour far and wide? Somebody will eventually research the source of that rumour to determine its validity.

Rumour is a currently circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth.

The Loch Ness monster is such a rumour, however, it’s also been rumoured to be taking a break at the moment due to the covid-19 outbreak. There are a multitude of other famous rumours such as: Crocodiles live in the sewers of New York City or Keanu Reeves is immortal.  Click on the link if you wish to read more of them.

Research is the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach conclusions.

Some research studies can take years before conclusions can be drawn, however, other research studies can be take as long as it takes to ask the question. Is it true?

Research and rumour will always have a place in society because, what would people talk about if they didn’t have hearsay and conjecture to discuss? Remember: The facts are not always as interesting as rumour.

I’ll leave you with one final thought:

The truth is a destination where every rumour dies.
