Something New Every Day

Stories and essays on identity, creative thought, and everyday common sense.

Yes, time is amazing. You can’t see it or hear it, but you can sense its presence, and you will measure your whole life based on what you do with the small bit of time you’re given. The really interesting thing is that you won’t fully remember the best part of your life while you’ll remember every second of the worst part of your life. Please allow me to explain.

Somedays, you will feel like time flies. These are the moments, hours, or days of your life when you are fully engaged in what you’re doing. The best example of this is when you’re having a conversation with your soul mate. Hours have passed by, and you don’t know where they went. You don’t fully remember what you were talking about. You just remember it was a wonderful experience. Other examples include reading a brilliant book or working on a hobby. Lost in time or living in the moment is the best way to describe these events.

On other days, especially when you’re hungover, talking with opinionated, in school, or working at something you don’t enjoy. You will think that the batteries in the clock are failing because the second hand is taking so long to go around. I don’t need to go into detail because unless you’ve had an incredibly lucky life, you will have your own examples. Needless to say that these are the moments that you wish were lost in time, but no, you remember them as clearly today as if they had happened yesterday.

So, you partially forget the good times and have a perfect memory of the bad times. Everyone else is the same unless they learn to be selective with their memories. I’ve been doing this with my own children since they were toddlers. Wherever we went, at the end of the day, I would ask them to remember the best part about the day.

That created a pattern so that when they remember things, they’re always looking to remember the good things, not the bad things like that two hour queue for the rollercoaster.

Remember, it’s your mind, you call the shots, you choose what you want to remember, and you choose what you release.

My, my, is that the time? I’ve got to go, I hope you create some wonderful memories this year.
