In every classroom and every workplace, there’s often a bully lurking in the shadows, feeding on the vulnerability of others. One might think that with the advent of human evolution, such behaviour would be relegated to folklore, a cautionary tale from a bygone era. But the sad truth is that bullies persist, a dark thread woven into the fabric of our society. Yet, for every bully, there exists a potential Ben. Someone who, through quiet strength and unassuming dignity, stands as a beacon of hope and change.
Ben’s story.
In the small town of Elmswood, there was a bully named Tom who thrived on intimidating others. Tall and broad-shouldered, he would strut down the halls of Elmswood High with an air of invincibility. His favourite target was Ben, a quietly spoken gentleman who preferred the company of books over people. Ben was always respectful, never causing trouble, which made him an easy mark for Tom’s cruel pranks.
One chilly autumn afternoon, Ben was reading in the school library when Tom decided to make his day miserable. Tom snatched the book from Ben’s hands and began to taunt him, loudly reading passages in a mocking tone. The librarian turned a blind eye as usual, accustomed to Tom’s antics, and too intimidated to intervene.
But something was different about Ben that day. He’d been dealing with Tom’s bullying for years, and the endless torment had finally taken its toll. He stood up, fixing Tom with a steady gaze, surprising everyone who had never seen him show any defiance before.
“Give it back, Tom,” Ben said, his voice calm but firm.
Tom sneered, “Or what, bookworm? Are you gonna hit me with your book?”
The library fell silent, eyes darting between the bully and his unlikely challenger. Ben’s calm demeanour was unnerving, even to Tom. For the first time, the bully felt a twinge of uncertainty.

Ben took a step closer, his eyes never leaving Tom’s. “I said, give it back.”
Tom’s bravado faltered, and he shoved the book into Ben’s chest, muttering, “Whatever, freak.”
The incident in the library set off a ripple through the school. Whispers followed Ben in the hallways, and the students looked at him with newfound respect. Tom, on the other hand, felt his grip on his reign of terror slipping. Determined to reassert his dominance, he decided to confront Ben again, this time after school.
As Ben walked home that day, he heard footsteps behind him. He turned to find Tom blocking his path, flanked by two of his cronies. “You think you can embarrass me and get away with it?” Tom snarled.
Ben remained calm, but inside, he was bracing himself for what was to come. “I don’t want any trouble, Tom. Just leave me alone.”
Tom lunged at Ben, shoving him to the ground. But as Tom moved in to strike, Ben rolled away and quickly got to his feet. Years of reading and studying hadn’t made him physically strong, but they had given him a sharp mind. He had been learning self-defense moves from his father, who was a retired police officer.
Using the momentum of Tom’s aggressive attack, Ben applied a simple yet effective throw, sending Tom sprawling to the ground. The bully’s cronies froze, stunned by the sight of their leader being taken down so easily.
Tom scrambled to his feet, his face red with anger and humiliation. But before he could make another move, Ben spoke, his voice as steady as ever. “Enough, Tom. This ends now. If you keep this up, you’ll only end up hurting yourself more.”
Tom’s rage turned to confusion and then to something that looked almost like fear. He looked around at the gathering crowd, all eyes on him, and realized his days of bullying were over. Defeated, he muttered a curse under his breath and walked away, his cronies trailing behind.
From that day on, Tom never bothered Ben or anyone else. The students of Elmswood High had seen the power of quiet strength and respect, embodied in the unassuming figure of Ben. The library became a place of peace, and Ben continued his studies, not as a victim, but as a hero who had stood up to a bully and changed the school for the better.
