We will never know other people. We will only know the stories they share with us about their life. Their internal dialogue will always remain a mystery to us and maybe from themselves, too. Only the very curious people will continue to learn about other people. Ben is one of those people. Please read his story.
Ben’s story.
Ben had always prided himself on being a good judge of character. As a psychologist, he believed his profession granted him a deeper understanding of people than the average person. His days were spent unravelling the complexities of the human mind, listening to patients share their fears, dreams, and deepest secrets. Each session reinforced his belief that, given enough time and trust, he could truly understand anyone.
However, one warm autumn afternoon, Ben’s perspective began to shift. He was attending his college reunion, a gathering he had anticipated eagerly. Nostalgia filled the air as he reconnected with old friends, each encounter reminding him of the shared experiences and camaraderie of their youth. Among the familiar faces was Lucy, a quiet, reserved woman Ben had always regarded as somewhat shy but kind-hearted.
Lucy had been in Ben’s psychology class, and though they had never been particularly close, he remembered her fondly. She had always been a good listener, often offering insightful comments during their discussions. Ben had often wondered about the hidden depths behind her thoughtful demeanour but had never found the opportunity to explore them.
That evening, as they sat under a canopy of stars, sipping wine and reminiscing about the past, Ben found himself seated next to Lucy. They began talking, their conversation meandering through the years that had passed since graduation. As they talked, Ben realised there were facets about Lucy he had never imagined. She spoke of her travels, her passion for art, and her struggles with anxiety—an issue she had kept hidden during their college days.
The more Lucy shared, the more Ben realised how little he had known about her. He had always assumed she was content with her quiet life, but here she was, revealing a rich tapestry of experiences and emotions. It struck him that his perception of her had been woefully incomplete. He had seen only a fraction of who she truly was.

This revelation sparked a cascade of introspection in Ben. He thought about his patients, his friends, and even his family. How many of them harboured depths and complexities he had never glimpsed? How many smiles concealed pain, and how many silences hid stories yearning to be told?
In the weeks following the reunion, Ben became more attuned to the hidden layers of people around him. He started paying closer attention, not just to the words spoken but to the emotions beneath them. He asked more questions, listened more intently, and found himself continually surprised by what he learned.
One afternoon, Ben was with a patient named Mark, a middle-aged man struggling with depression. Mark had been coming to see Ben for over a year, and Ben believed he had a good grasp of his patient’s issues. But that day, Mark shared something new—an anecdote from his childhood that illuminated a core part of his psyche Ben had never fully understood. It was as if one more piece of a puzzle had fallen into place, revealing a more complete picture of who Mark was.
Sitting in his quiet office after Mark left, Ben pondered the implications of his recent experiences. He realised that his understanding of others would always be limited by the information they chose to share and his own interpretations. Each person was a universe of thoughts, memories, and emotions, much of which remained unseen and unknown.
It was a humbling realisation. Ben understood that while he could strive to know others deeply, there would always be mysteries beyond his grasp. This awareness did not diminish his commitment to his work; instead, it enriched it. He approached each interaction with a renewed sense of curiosity and respect for the unknown.
Ben’s journey taught him that knowing others is an ongoing, ever-evolving process. It is a pursuit filled with discovery and surprise, reminding him that the true essence of understanding lies in acknowledging and embracing the endless complexity of the human soul.
P.S. Just as everyone else is on an ever-evolving journey of discovery, so are we.
