Ben Curtain was a cautious man by nature. Throughout his life, he’d adhered to a simple yet effective piece of advice: “Nobody messes with crazy.” It was his guiding principle, one that kept him out of trouble more times than he could count. He saw the wisdom in avoiding those who seemed unpredictable or volatile, believing it was better to steer clear than get entangled in their chaos. However, that philosophy was about to be adjusted after his encounter with Johan.
Ben’s Story
One summer, Ben moved to a small, quiet town nestled in the hills. It was a place where everyone knew each other, and peace was the norm. The only anomaly in the town’s tranquil atmosphere was Johan, a man with a reputation for being a bit unhinged. Johan lived alone in a dilapidated house on the outskirts of town, and tales of his bizarre behaviour were plentiful. Some said he was a genius misunderstood by society, while others whispered he was just plain crazy. Ben, recalling his mantra, decided to keep his distance.
One day, however, Ben found himself in an unexpected situation. The town’s annual fair was underway, and he was enjoying the festivities when he noticed a group of teenagers teasing Johan, who had come into town for supplies. They taunted him, calling him names and mocking his peculiar ways. Ben watched from a distance, initially tempted to walk away and stick to his rule. But something made him pause. Johan, usually placid, was clearly agitated, and Ben felt a pang of empathy.
Suddenly, Johan snapped. He started yelling incomprehensibly, eyes wild with anger. The teenagers laughed even harder, but Ben knew this could escalate quickly. Ignoring the little voice in his head urging caution, Ben stepped forward and put himself between Johan and the teenagers.
“Enough,” Ben said firmly. The teenagers were taken aback, not expecting anyone to intervene, especially not someone like Ben, known for minding his own business. “Leave him alone,” he added, his tone brooking no argument.
The teens muttered and laughed, but they eventually dispersed, leaving Ben and Johan standing there. Johan was still breathing heavily, clearly struggling to calm down. Ben turned to him, unsure what to say. Johan, catching his breath, looked at Ben with a mix of surprise and gratitude.

“Why’d you do that?” Johan asked, his voice rough from shouting.
Ben shrugged, feeling awkward. “It was the right thing to do.”
Johan studied him for a moment, then gave a short nod. “People think I’m crazy,” he muttered. “But I’m not. Just… different.”
Ben nodded, realising he had judged Johan too quickly. They stood in silence for a moment before Johan offered a rare smile. “Thanks,” he said simply before turning to leave.
As Ben watched Johan walk away, he felt a shift within himself. He had always believed that avoiding those who seemed unstable was the safest course. But today, he learned a valuable lesson: not every act of perceived madness is dangerous, and sometimes, reaching out is the braver choice. Johan wasn’t just a “crazy” man; he was a person with feelings, deserving of respect.
From that day forward, Ben’s mantra evolved. He still believed in being cautious around unpredictability, but he also understood the importance of compassion and not jumping to conclusions. He started engaging more with the townspeople, including those he previously might have avoided, like Johan.
In time, Ben and Johan developed an unlikely friendship. Johan shared his thoughts, revealing a brilliant mind burdened by loneliness and misunderstanding. Ben listened, offering companionship without judgment. He realised that everyone had their own struggles, and sometimes, all it took was one person to reach out and make a difference.
In the end, the lesson Ben learned wasn’t just about avoiding trouble; it was about embracing empathy and understanding. And while he still believed “nobody messes with crazy,” he also knew that sometimes, the real courage lies in challenging that belief and extending a hand instead of turning away.
P.S. Not everyone who appears crazy is actually crazy, They’re just different.
