Something New Every Day

Stories and essays on identity, creative thought, and everyday common sense.

Life is a mystery that you have to live one day at a time because if you don’t, then you could miss out on the good days while you’re concentrating on the bad ones. Read Ben’s story about accepting the ebbs and flow of life.

Ben’s story.

Ben was the kind of person who lived with an unusual acceptance of life’s unpredictable nature. Growing up in a small town, he learned early on that nothing ever stays the same. His father, a fisherman, often told him stories about the sea—the calm days, the storms, the bounty, and the empty nets. “Life is a roller coaster, full of twists and turns, ups and downs. Expecting anything else will leave you frustrated,” his father would say, his eyes reflecting the wisdom of someone who had navigated many turbulent waters.

When Ben graduated high school, his friends scattered in different directions, each pursuing what they believed was a straight path to success. Ben, however, had no fixed destination. He felt a strong pull to experience the world in its raw, unfiltered form. He took a job on a cargo ship, travelling from port to port, continent to continent. Every new city was a chapter in his ever-evolving story.

One winter, Ben found himself in a small village in northern Norway. The days were short, and the nights seemed endlessly cold. He met Ingrid, a local artist who captured the harsh beauty of the Arctic in her paintings. They spent weeks together, exploring fjords and sharing stories by the fire. But as the season changed, Ben felt the familiar itch to move on. Ingrid understood; she had seen it in his eyes from the start. They parted ways with a deep mutual respect, no promises, just gratitude for the shared moments.

Next, Ben found himself in bustling Mumbai, where the noise and chaos were a stark contrast to the serene Arctic. He worked in a community kitchen, helping to feed those in need. Amidst the city’s ceaseless motion, he met Raj, an elderly man with a vibrant past. Raj shared stories of his youth, his love, and loss, teaching Ben about resilience and the importance of finding joy in the little things.

Years passed, and Ben continued to ride the roller coaster of life. He weathered heartbreaks and celebrated new loves, faced failures, and savoured successes. Each experience, whether a high or a low, was embraced with the same openness. He saw every twist and turn, not as a disruption but as an integral part of his journey.

One day, while resting in a quiet village in Tuscany, Ben received a letter from home. His father had passed away, leaving behind a small house and a fishing boat. Ben returned to his hometown, now seeing it with the eyes of someone who had seen much of the world. He felt a deep connection to the place, a realisation that this was where his journey had begun.

Ben decided to stay, not out of obligation, but out of choice. He took up his father’s trade, finding solace in the rhythmic ebb and flow of the sea. The years on the water brought him a profound understanding of his father’s wisdom. He continued to live with the same acceptance of life’s unpredictability, passing the lesson on to the young fishermen who worked with him.

In his later years, Ben often sat by the shore, watching the waves crash and recede, a testament to life’s ceaseless motion. He thought of all the places he had been, the people he had met, and the experiences that had shaped him. Ben’s life was a tapestry woven with threads of joy and sorrow, adventure and routine, love, and loss.

In the end, he knew that embracing the roller coaster had made his journey a rich and fulfilling one.

Have a great day today.
