Your journey in life is governed more by your emotions than your intellect. While intellect provides reasoning and logic, it’s often your emotions—like passion, fear, love, and desire—that drive you to make choices, take risks, and persevere through challenges. That’s the reason why you need to be emotionally balanced so that you make the right decision for you. Please read about Ben’s emotional dilemma when he faced a life-changing decision.
Ben’s story.
Inside Ben’s mind, there was a bustling community of emotions, each with its own distinct personality and purpose. They lived in a place called the Inner City, a complex network of streets and buildings that reflected the ever-changing landscape of Ben’s thoughts and experiences.
At the heart of the city was Delight, a radiant, golden figure who often danced through the streets, leaving trails of light in her wake. Delight was the most popular emotion, and she loved organizing festivals and parties to keep the other emotions uplifted. Her home was a grand, sunlit palace where everyone was welcome to visit and bask in her warmth.
Across the plaza from Delight’s palace lived Sadness. Her home was quieter and shrouded in mist, a place of deep blues and purples. Sadness was thoughtful and introspective, often retreating to her library, where she kept records of all of Ben’s memories that were tinged with melancholy. She wasn’t as social as Joy, but she had wisdom that the others respected. Though Sadness often stayed alone, Joy made it a point to visit her regularly, reminding her that her presence was valued.
Down the road in a more chaotic part of the city was Anger. He was fiery and intense, with a home that resembled a forge, always filled with the sound of clanging metal. Anger was the protector of Ben’s boundaries. Whenever he sensed that something was wrong, he would rush to the city gates, ready to defend against any perceived threat. He was close friends with Fear, who lived nearby in a tall, watchtower-like building filled with alarms and security systems. Fear’s job was to keep Ben safe from danger, and he and Anger often collaborated when Ben was under stress.
Disgust had a more refined taste. She resided in a sleek, modern apartment decorated in shades of green. Disgust’s role was to keep Ben from making bad decisions—whether it was about food, fashion, or friendships. She was sharp-tongued and quick to judge, but her intentions were always to protect Ben from things that might harm him.
Surprise was the most unpredictable of the group, living in a house that could change shape and colour depending on her mood. She was responsible for keeping Ben’s life interesting and always ready to introduce something new and unexpected. She was close friends with Delight but had a mischievous streak that sometimes caused chaos in the city.
One day, the Inner City was thrown into turmoil. Ben had just received some unexpected news—a job offer that would require him to move to a new city, far away from everything he knew. The emotions gathered in the city square, each reacting in their own way.

“I can’t believe it! This is amazing!” Delight exclaimed, spinning in circles. “A new adventure, new people to meet, new experiences!”
“But what about everything we have here?” Sadness countered, her voice soft and trembling. “All the memories, all the people we’ll leave behind.”
Anger slammed his fist on the ground, causing a small tremor. “This is ridiculous! What if it doesn’t work out? What if they don’t appreciate him there? We can’t just up and leave!”
Fear, peering through binoculars from his watchtower, added, “We need to be careful. There are so many unknowns—new challenges, new risks. This could be dangerous.”
Disgust wrinkled her nose. “What if the new city is filthy? What if the food is terrible? What if the people are awful? We need to think this through.”
Surprise, who had been quietly listening, suddenly jumped up. “But think of all the possibilities! This could be the best thing that’s ever happened to us. A whole new world to explore!”
The emotions were at a standstill, each one pulling Ben in a different direction. They argued, each convinced that their perspective was the most important. The city grew louder and more chaotic, the streets filled with their clashing voices.
Finally, Delight raised her hand, asking for silence. “We need to remember that we’re all in this together. Every one of us has a role to play in Ben’s life, and this decision affects all of us. Let’s find a way to work together to balance our feelings so that Ben can make the best choice.”
Sadness nodded, wiping away a tear. “We can acknowledge the loss and the fear while still being excited about the future.”
Anger grumbled but agreed. “We should be cautious and protect Ben, but we shouldn’t let fear hold us back.”
Fear slowly lowered his binoculars. “I suppose… if we prepare for the risks, we can handle them.”
Disgust shrugged. “Fine, but if the new city is gross, I’m going to be very vocal about it.”
Surprise clapped her hands. “This is going to be so much fun!”
With a new sense of unity, the emotions began to work together, each one contributing their perspective to help Ben make his decision. Delight infused the idea with hope and excitement, Sadness reminded him of the importance of the past, Anger ensured that his boundaries were respected, Fear helped him plan for the unknowns, Disgust kept him mindful of the potential downsides, and Surprise kept the sense of adventure alive.
In the end, Ben decided to take the job. The Inner City was abuzz with activity as the emotions prepared for the big move, each of them ready to face the new challenges together. They had learned that while they each had their own roles, it was their collaboration that made them strongest, guiding Ben through the complexities of life.
