Stories and essays on identity, creative thought, and everyday common sense.

There’s a big difference between what you deserve versus what you’re entitled to. This is a lesson the majority of people will learn as they travel through life.

You’re born into a world with eight billion people who deserve the same things you do—safety, respect, opportunity, and love. From the moment you take your first breath, you’re not entitled to anything. The world doesn’t owe you kindness, comfort, or success. These things, like everything else, must be earned.

Take Leo, for instance. Leo grew up believing the world revolved around him. His parents gave him everything—never letting him face the discomfort of disappointment or struggle. When Leo reached adulthood, he expected life to cater to his needs, just as his family had. He believed that hard work was something other people did, that success would naturally find him because of who he was.

But the world had other plans.

His first job interview didn’t go well. When the recruiter asked him why he thought he was the right fit for the company, Leo’s response was vague, full of confidence, but lacking substance. “Because I deserve it,” he said, as though that were reason enough.

The recruiter, unimpressed, handed Leo back his resume with a polite smile. “Deserving it isn’t enough,” she said. “We’re looking for someone who will work for it.”

Stunned, Leo left the office, his mind racing. No one had ever told him that before. As the days turned into weeks, Leo sent out more applications and faced the same result. Rejection after rejection, the world kept reminding him that nothing would be handed to him.

It was a bitter lesson. Leo had to confront a reality he had never prepared for: the world didn’t owe him anything.

Over time, something in him shifted. Instead of expecting, he started doing. Instead of assuming, he started learning. Leo stopped asking, “Why don’t I have what I deserve?” and started asking, “How can I earn what I want?”

The next job he applied for, he prepared differently. He researched, honed his skills, and showed up ready to prove his worth, not because he felt entitled to the position, but because he was willing to work for it. This time, the answer was yes.

Leo’s journey was far from over, but he had finally learned the most important lesson of all: in a world full of people who are all equally deserving, entitlement will get you nowhere. Effort, resilience, and humility are the true keys to unlocking what you seek.

Because in the end, you’re not entitled to anything—you have to earn it.
