Something New Every Day

Stories and essays on identity, creative thought, and everyday common sense.

There are some people who don’t appear any happier regardless of how much they’ve acquired, and that’s normal for them because they live in an external world. Please allow me to elaborate.

You see, in our fast-paced world, it’s easy to equate happiness with the accumulation of possessions, achievements, or the approval of others. However, true contentment often emerges not from acquiring more but from needing less.

The Illusion of More

Society frequently promotes the idea that more is better—more wealth, more success, and more external validation. A good example of this is when you read the headline, “celebrity is seen wearing the same outfit at award ceremony,” Like they’re supposed to disgard an outfit after wearing it once (shocking). This mindset can lead to a perpetual cycle of desire and dissatisfaction, as each new acquisition or achievement only temporarily fills the void.

Embracing Minimalism

Minimalism isn’t solely about reducing physical belongings; it’s about simplifying our mental and emotional landscapes. By identifying and focusing on what truly matters, we can let go of superfluous desires that don’t contribute to our mental well-being.

Practical Steps to Needing Less

1. Self-Reflection: Regularly assess your desires and motivations. Ask yourself whether they align with your core values and contribute to your genuine happiness.

2Practice Gratitude: Cultivate a habit of appreciating what you already have. This shifts focus from what’s lacking to what’s abundant in your life.

3. Mindful Consumption: Before making new purchases or commitments, consider their true necessity and the value they add to your life.

4. Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to activities, relationships, or obligations that don’t serve your well-being, allowing space for what truly matters.

The Freedom of Less

By consciously choosing to need less, we liberate ourselves from the endless pursuit of external validation and material possessions. This freedom allows us to invest time and energy into personal growth, relationships, and experiences that bring lasting fulfilment.

In essence, the journey towards needing less is a path to discovering that we are already enough and that true happiness resides within.

I’ll leave you with one final thought.

Stop paying for solutions to problems you only think you need.
