Something New Every Day

Stories and essays on identity, creative thought, and everyday common sense.

I love to hate you because you make indifference impossible. You challenge me, frustrate me, and push every button I didn’t even know I had. And yet, beneath the irritation, there’s a strange admiration—an undeniable pull that keeps me engaged. Maybe it’s the way you sharpen my wit, force me to think deeper, or make every victory feel just a little sweeter. Whatever it is, I can’t ignore you. Hating you is almost as intoxicating as loving you… and maybe that’s the real problem.

People who’ve experienced that paragraph know what it is to be alive because to feel is to live. Every emotion—joy, sorrow, love, anger—reminds us that we are present, engaged, and deeply connected to the world around us. Even the emotions that frustrate or overwhelm us are proof that we are alive, experiencing, and evolving into a new version of ourselves.

Happiness makes life sweet, but pain gives it depth. Love makes us vulnerable, but it also makes life meaningful. Fear warns us, excitement drives us, and sadness teaches us. To numb ourselves to emotion is to exist, but not truly live.

So even when emotions feel chaotic or exhausting, maybe they’re not something to fight against. Maybe they’re just part of the rhythm of being human—the heartbeat of a life fully lived.
