Why Do So Many People Take Character and Intelligence Tests?

9. Competitive Comparison

Intelligence tests, particularly IQ scores, can become a way for people to rank themselves against others. While this can fuel motivation, it can also foster insecurity or elitism, depending on how the results are interpreted and used.

Criticisms and Cautions

Not surprisingly, despite their popularity, not all character and intelligence tests are scientifically sound because people are complicated.

  • MBTI, while popular, lacks strong empirical support and test-retest reliability.
  • Some learning style theories have been debunked, yet are still widely used.
  • IQ tests don’t capture creative, emotional, or practical intelligence.

Additionally, people may fall into self-fulfilling prophecies, believing they must act according to their type or score, which can limit growth and experimentation.

Conclusion: Insight with a Grain of Salt

Character and intelligence tests can be powerful tools for self-awareness, growth, and connection—but they’re not the ultimate truth. Like any tool, their value depends on how they’re used. When approached critically and with self-compassion, these tests can open doors. Just be sure not to let a four-letter code or a single number define your entire identity.

What about you? Have you ever taken a test that felt truly accurate—or one that missed the mark completely?
